ID Protection

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the country. And because of that, you need to be even more diligent about protecting your personal information and preventing it from ending up in the wrong hands. These days, identity thieves only need a few pieces of information to take out loans, credit cards…even mortgages.

They say knowledge is power.  So, here are a few tips from the Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) to help you stay protected.

Do:

  1. Shred documents with sensitive information
  2. Keep your passwords protected and change them often
  3. Check your credit report every 4 months
  4. Monitor your financial activity with Online Banking on a daily basis

Don’t:

  1. Provide information over the phone or on the internet unless you initiate the conversation
  2. Respond to any emails that may look like the IRS—they’ll always send you a letter in the mail
  3. Carry your Social Security Card in your wallet
  4. Write down any PIN number—memorize them instead
